Stephen Ferszt’s practice at Wolff & Samson concentrates on ERISA and employee benefit matters, as well as estate planning and estate administration. His broad experience in the area of qualified and non-qualified benefit plans includes working with clients in the design, implementation and administration of these types of plans in the workplace, as well as counseling corporations and executives in executive compensation matters.
Steve counsels clients before the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation and various state agencies. He advises boards of directors, companies and plan fiduciaries on a broad range of plan administration matters. These include voluntary compliance initiatives with the IRS, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Department of Labor, where he has extensive experience in obtaining correction resolutions. He also assists clients in obtaining private letter rulings from the IRS.
In addition, Steve regularly counsels clients in connection with welfare benefit matters, including health benefit, life insurance, cafeteria plans and similar programs. He also advises on matters of estate and succession planning, wealth preservation and transfers, and the fulfillment of their responsibilities as estate fiduciaries in administration matters.
A frequent speaker at professional and business conferences, Steve covers a wide range of topics of interest to attorneys, accountants, third-party administrators, clients and other pension and tax professionals. He lectures for the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education, the New Jersey State Bar Association, various county bar associations and others.
Steve is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and was recently appointed to ACTEC's Employee Benefits Committee. In addition, Steve serves on the Legal Advisory Board of the Small Business Council of America, a national nonprofit organization that represents privately held and family-owned businesses exclusively in federal tax, retirement, health care and employee benefits matters. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and New York Magazine’s “Top Lawyers” for both Employee Benefits Law and Trusts and Estates, and in New Jersey Super Lawyers. He also earned Martindale Hubbell’s highest AV® rating.
